Putting the web to
work for you
Greetings! I've worked in multimedia since 1993 and web development since 1996 -- in fact, you can still see my very first site courtesy of the Internet Archive. As the web has become more sophisticated, I've specialized in helping companies do business online. This includes…
- Consulting: recommending the best use of technology to achieve business goals
- Usability: designing interfaces that are intuitive for customers and flexible for internal staff
- Programming: building custom websites and administrative interfaces to support any workflow
Read on for examples of the companies I've helped:
Johnson Publishing Company
Although a leader in the magazine publishing industry, Johnson Publishing Company had fallen behind on the web when I started working with them. I moved their five websites to a reliable server, oversaw the redesign of each site's user interface, and built a unified administrative system that allowed various departments to manage new subscriptions, back issue orders, online advertising, promotions, and letters to the editors. This renovation allowed the business to expand their promotional activities and project a more modern image to customers.
Content That Works
When I met Content That Works, they were using an off-the-shelf content management system and a largely manual process to deliver content in a few formats to their newspaper clients. I built a custom CMS that completely automated their unique delivery process, allowing the business to offer more formats to more customers with no additional work.
SaveChicago.org
As a brand-new business, SaveChicago.org presented an opportunity to start from scratch with web infrastructure. I built a framework for managing access and billing from two different user types, an administrative interface for customer service tasks, and a front end that incorporated Yahoo! maps and an Amazon.com storefront.
Type A Learning Agency
During a long relationship with Type A, I've developed most of the infrastructure that this innovative company uses to manage and produce their e-learning projects. This includes selecting and rolling out new development tools, building custom scheduling and budgeting systems, and testing and documenting technology best practices.
Money Savvy Generation
Before e-commerce was accessible to most small businesses, I built a simple online store for Money Savvy Generation to sell their educational piggy banks. As the business grew, I expanded the store's functionality to include integration with UPS shipping systems and a separate, limited-access interface for warehouse staff. These enhancements have enabled the business to handle ever-increasing orders while keeping costs in check.
